As promised, the past week was pretty big for us. Starting on March 1, we marked Abolition Day with a panel discussion featuring three people who have been changed forever by the death penalty: Charles Keith, Lisa Brown and Rev. Sharon Risher. Watch the recorded program on Facebook here.

We were featured twice in Newsweek. First, on Monday with Rev. Risher, who opposes the death penalty for Dylann Roof, the white supremacist now on federal death row who killed Rev. Risher’s…

Today, March 1, is Death Penalty Abolition Day. On March 1, 1847, Michigan became the first state in the union to abolish the death penalty. We will to mark this occasion with a panel featuring Rev. Sharon Risher, whose mother, two cousins and friend were murdered by Dylann Roof in the Charleston church massacre.

March 1 also marks the 40th day of the Biden administration. We want to end federal executions in his first 100 days and we’re nearly at the halfway mark. …

With less than hour to go before the execution warrant ran out, the US Supreme Court upheld the religious freedom injunction that had been imposed on the state of Alabama, preventing the execution from going forward. Congratulations and thank you to the legal team!

On Tuesday we faxed 329 pages with over 11,000 signatures demanding that the execution be stopped. Just a short time ago, we faxed another 102 pages with an additional 4,000+ signatures. Since then, another 3000 have signed. We are preparing that fax now. (They won’t give un an e-mail address, so we are clogging up their fax machine.)

As I write this just before 4pm CST, there are two hours before the executions is scheduled. If you want the details, keep reading. If you just want the next action steps, scroll down!

Help stop the execution planned for Thursday evening in Alabama, plus several important save the dates. But first….

These are exciting times for our movement! On Friday, the state of Virginia’s Senate voted to join its House of Delegates to pass legislation that abolishes the death penalty. This is huge! When Governor Northam signs that bill, Virginia will become the 23rd state without the death penalty, and the first southern state to legislatively abolish the death penalty. It’s not too late to sign our “thank you” letter to Virginia’s abolitionist leaders.

GREAT NEWS! In an historic vote, just a few minutes ago the Virginia House of Delegates passed a HB2263, a bill to repeal that state’s death penalty with a bi-partisan vote of to 57 to 41.

The Virginia Senate and the Virginia House of Delegates have now voted to send identical bills to Virginia Governor Ralph Northam for his signature. One body still has to pass the bill of the other, and that is expected. When the bill becomes law, it will end the use of the death penalty in the most-executing jurisdiction in the United States.

Here’s how to be most impactful in supporting the campaign to pass HR 262, the Federal Death Penalty Prohibition Act of 2021.

Here are three quick actions to consider for yourself, and just as important, to invite others to join you by taking action themselves:

  1. Anyone may sign this THANK YOU petition to President Biden, which we will be delivering to him on Monday afternoon. We anticipate his signing an Executive Order prohibiting federal and military executions on Tuesday. We want to support him in that, and ask him to take it further.
  2. Anyone may use this tool to quickly…

Joe Biden promised that one of his first actions is to sign an executive order banning all federal executions.

This is a giant step away from the previous administration that executed 13 people, but we want to take it a step further. We are working with leaders in Congress to put a bill on Joe Biden’s desk in first 100 days that abolishes the federal and military death penalty once and for all.

We need your help to do it.

We’re looking to hire 20 organizers to mobilize support for HR 262, the Federal Death Penalty Prohibition Act of 2021

We learned today that Joe Biden plans to sign an executive order banning federal executions. Please click here to say THANKS to President-Elect Biden.

Together with you and many others, Death Penalty Action is going to take this much further. We plan to organize and have congress send Biden a bill that abolishes the federal and military death penalty. We also want our new president to take it all the way, and BULLDOZE the Death House at the federal prison at Terre Haute, where Trump executed 13 prisoners in the past six months. …
