Thousands more concerned individuals have signed the petition since yesterday. Those signatures are on their way to Governor Abbott in about an hour.

Take action NOW to help stop the Texecution of John Ramirez at 6pm CDT tomorrow evening (Weds — 9/8/2021. Because of the Labor Day holiday, the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles voted last week to decline a recommendation for clemency. This morning, petition signatures were delivered to Governor Abbott, and more will be delivered on Wednesday by noon CDT.
Also, the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals declined to hear Ramirez’s argument that killing him without full adherence to his faith practice is a violation of his rights. An interesting dissent in that ruling by a judge on the 5th…

By Rabbi Benjamin Zober
Let us proclaim the sacred power of this day:
it is awesome and full of dread
For on this day Your dominion is exalted,
Your throne established in steadfast love;
there in truth You reign.
In truth You are
Judge and Arbiter, counsel and Witness.
I have unfortunate news.
Just a short while ago, the Oklahoma Pardon & Parole Board created a new policy for what to do when a commutation hearing is set and then an execution date is set in the same case. When that happens, as is the case with Julius Jones, then the entire matter will be addressed at a clemency hearing, which must take place at least 21 days prior to the scheduled execution.
URGENT! Even though it is unclear if the state has a viable means of conducting executions, yesterday, the Oklahoma Attorney General asked the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals to set execution dates for seven individuals starting with John Grant on October 7, 2021 and Julius Jones on October 28, 2021.
We have two opportunities for immediate action:
Earlier today, we got the e-mails from the bill sponsors, asking for our help.
Senator Durbin and Representative Pressley and their colleagues in the US Senate and the US House of Representatives have sent letters to US Attorney General Merrick Garland, urging him to withdraw notices seeking death sentences in current federal prosecutions. They urged him to order federal prosecutors to stop seeing death sentences and to support efforts in Congress to pass the Federal Death Penalty Prohibition Act of 2021.
How can you help?
Two Honorably Discharged US Marines Among Next to be Executed
Op-Ed by Captain Art Cody, U.S. Navy (Retired)
Mentally ill veterans should not be executed.
Executions in the United States have become relatively rare, so much so that many Americans are unaware when they occur. As an example, there are two executions currently scheduled this summer, and neither has received significant press coverage. Yet there’s something both different and saddening about these two executions.
Texas and Nevada each plan to execute an honorably discharged U.S. Marine; John Hummel in Texas on June 30 and Zane Floyd in Nevada on July…
Two Remembrances in the Coming Days
For those of us who knew Bill Pelke, or who knew of him, we remain stunned in our grief. Bill Pelke died of heart attack in November. The hole left in our hearts and in our movement remains massive.
There are two remembrances happening over the coming days.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg noted that people who are well represented at trial rarely get the death penalty. But as Marc Bookman shows in a dozen brilliant essays, the problems with capital punishment run far deeper than just bad representation.
With your hosts Abe Bonowitz, Charles…
