Federal Death Penalty Panel to Celebrate Increased Momentum Toward Abolition

Washington, DC: The daughter of one of the victims of a man on federal death row and the daughter of one of the federal prisoners executed in the Trump Administration’s end-of-term execution spree will be among the speakers on a panel to discuss new endorsements and support for HR262/SB582, the Federal Death Penalty Prohibition Act of 2021. The complete, current list of bill sponsors will be made public on May 7th, 2021.

Death Penalty Action, a national advocacy group building a coalition effort of more than 250 organizations, will host a virtual program starting at 11am on Friday, May 7, 2021. The Voices of Experience on the Federal Death Penalty program will convene via Zoom and broadcast live on Facebook. Members of the media and the public are invited to REGISTER HERE to be in the live Zoom audience, which will include the opportunity to ask questions of panelists. The event will be recorded and available for viewing on the Death Penalty Action Facebook page shortly after it concludes.

Featured speakers include:

  • Rev. Sharon Risher, whose mother and aunt were among those murdered in the 2015 massacre at Mother Emanuel AME church in Charleston, SouthCarolina. The killer, white supremacist Dylan Roof, is currently on federal death row. Risher advocates for his sentence to be commuted to life imprisonment.
  • Bethany Bourgeois George, whose father was among the 13 federal prisoners killed during the federal execution spree in the final six months of the Trump Administration. Alfred Bourgeois was executed at the federal prison at Terre Haute on December 11, 2020.
  • Krisanne Vaillancourt Murphy, Executive Director of the Catholic Mobilizing Network.
  • Celia Ouellette, Chief Executive of the Responsible Business Initiative for Justice.
  • Other surprise guests are possible! The panel will be moderated by Abraham Bonowitz, executive director of Death Penalty Action.
