Virginia just abolished the death penalty. Governor Northam signed the bill into law today, making Virginia the first Southern state in the nation to abolish the death penalty.
This is a historic and monumental win for the fight to abolish the death penalty. Virginia has had the second highest number of executions since current death penalty laws were upheld in 1976 and has carried out over 1,300 executions since Europeans arrived in North America. Virginia has finally ended this inhumane practice and become the 23rd state that does not kill its own citizens.
So, what’s next? Ohio and the nation.
We’ve made incredible progress this year and are looking to push Ohio to be the next state to abolish the death penalty. Will you make a donation and be one of our first contributors to continue our momentum and abolish the death penalty in Ohio?
With your help we can finally get rid of the death penalty in 2021, and make sure no innocent person is ever executed by the death penalty again.
Yours in the struggle,
Abe Bonowitz, Executive Director of Death Penalty Action
