California Executions On Hold!
Governor Gavin Newsom will formally announce a moratorium on executions in that state for the duration of his time in office. This is HUGE news, and we congratulate our friends and allies in California — especially everyone at Death Penalty Focus!
“Our death penalty system has been — by any measure — a failure,” Newsom says in prepared remarks he is expected to deliver at a Capitol news conference Wednesday morning. “It has discriminated against defendants who are mentally ill, black and brown, or can’t afford expensive legal representation. It has provided no public safety benefit or value as a deterrent. It has wasted billions of taxpayer dollars.”
More than 700 people are on California’s death row. 24 have exhausted their appeals. For at least the next four years, none will be executed.
Death Penalty Action will share any available LIVE FEED from the press conference on our Facebook page. We believe the press conference has been set for 10am PDT/1pm EDT, although that is as-yet unconfirmed and is subject to change. Follow along and share this and other urgent news and updates on our Facebook and/or Twitter pages.
Death Penalty Action believes we can be safe from dangerous offenders and hold them accountable without killing them. Execution is NOT the solution. Death Penalty Action stands in the gap to stop executions and end the death penalty. The work we are doing together is more important than ever.
