UPDATE: At 4am the BOP called media witnesses back to the prison so they could execute Daniel Lee. More litigation is going on and as of 5:38am Daniel Lee is still very much alive. This item was written and posted with the belief that it was over, at least for this night.
Here’s the first thing: LAWYERS stopped the execution. My hat is off to all of those on the legal teams in these cases. Death Penalty Action’s work is in hightening the visibility of this issue, reaching new people concerned with this issue, and giving them a way to express their outrage.
It’s 3am as I write this. We were at our protest site in Terre Haute until after midnight. There was no execution tonight, but it came down to the wire. We made it to Indianapolis with tired hearts, but feeling pretty good about the prospect of no more executions this week.
