Death Penalty in Constitutional Crisis as Federal Executions To Resume
Update at 10am on July 14: “Execution for Political Points” — A statement from @abrahambonowitz and @DeathPenaltyAct regarding execution of #DanielLee: https://www.facebook.com/deathpenaltyaction/posts/2731051543843633 #DeathPenalty #StopExecutions #DefundTheDeathPenalty
UPDATE: At 4am the BOP called media witnesses back to the prison so they could execute Daniel Lee. More litigation is going on and as of 5:38am Daniel Lee is still very much alive. This item was written and posted with the belief that it was over, at least for this night.
Here’s the first thing: LAWYERS stopped the execution. My hat is off to all of those on the legal teams in these cases. Death Penalty Action’s work is in hightening the visibility of this issue, reaching new people concerned with this issue, and giving them a way to express their outrage.
It’s 3am as I write this. We were at our protest site in Terre Haute until after midnight. There was no execution tonight, but it came down to the wire. We made it to Indianapolis with tired hearts, but feeling pretty good about the prospect of no more executions this week.
Then I saw this tweet:
CLICK HERE to read the entire thread of messages. It is appalling! You must read Justice Sotomayor’s dissent. And here are the closing words of Justice Breyers:
Nutshell: Executions could possibly go forward as soon as Wednesday or else Friday of this week.
Because of YOU, Death Penalty Action is in Terre Haute. Together with our local allies, we had a long and incredibly successful day of conveying our core messages via the mass media.
This Associated Press story moved on the wire early in the day. It appeared on news pages and may be appearing in printed newspapers across the United States and beyond:
The Terre Haute Star-Tribune has outstanding and extensive coverage of a multitude of voices. A good place to start is here.
There is so much more. Death Penalty Action will continue to keep watch for you, and we will issue news and action updates on our Facebook and Twitter pages as available. We must continue to work, hope and pray for the best, but prepare for the worst.

#Trump is playing politics with the #DeathPenalty by scheduling executions in the middle of #COVID as a way to stoke his base before the political conventions. https://www.tribstar.com/opinion/flashpoint/flashpoint-trump-is-playing-politics-with-the-death-penalty/article_cdab851c-bfd4-11ea-ba68-47c8be824451.html | #StopExecutions #NoFederalExecutions #DefundTheDeathPenalty @DeathPenaltyAct #DanielLee
