Five Federal Execution Dates Set: Fight Back With Death Penalty Action!
This is the moment Death Penalty Action was created for. On January 19, 2017, we had just been released after 36 hours of incarceration for protesting executions, and as Scott and I were driving home, Donald Trump was about to be inaugurated. Looking around the movement to stop executions, we saw no entity ready to lead the struggle in the streets to stop executions. Death Penalty Action was born.

Working for the President of the United States, the Attorney General has ordered five federal execution dates to be set. The first date is December 9, 2019. The law provides for a four month period before clemency hearings, with the President being the final arbiter on whether or not to extend mercy by granting clemency with a commutation of a death sentence. However, Donald Trump has long been a fan of executions. The time to organize in NOW.

When federal executions last occurred, under the presidency of George W. Bush, two of the people leading the protests in the field outside the federal prison at Terre Haute, Indiana were us, Scott Langley and Abe Bonowitz. Scott took this photo, and that’s Abe discussing matters with a very nice Indiana State Police Officer. Now, as co-directors of Death Penalty Action, we will be leading this fight once again. We have already been in touch with Zann C. & Sarah D., two long-time supporters on the ground in Terre Haute. Zann pulled together the local crew nearly 20 years ago, and I am so glad we have her support again now.
