New Federal Execution Date Set: MORE ARE COMING. Take Action Now!
Sister Barbara had news: Lezmond Mitchell was moved to death watch today. His execution date has been set for August 26th.
Sister Barbara Batista texted me late yesterday afternoon. As his spiritual advisor and friend, she had just been on the phone with Kieth Nelson at the Federal death house in Terre Haute, where he is scheduled to be executed on August 28th. Sister Barbara had news: Lezmond Mitchell was moved to death watch today. His execution date has been set for August 26th.
This morning I spoke with Rev. Bill Breeden, who is a spiritual advisor to another man on death row. We’ve learned that FOUR more federal execution dates may be announced as soon as tomorrow. We also know that more than 20 federal death row prisoners are at or near the end of their appeals.
Here’s the thing. Petitioning the President has proven to be a waste of time. The federal death penalty is being used as a political tool by the Trump Administration and the campaign to re-elect Donald Trump. For this reason, Death Penalty Action is instead petitioning congress:
We have redrafted our petition to congress now that situations have changed. We urge you to consider the new language and add your name to endorse this new language.
This is important because tomorrow (Friday) we will be publicly launching a renewed and invigorated campaign to stop federal executions. By signing now, you will give this new petition a running start when the public reads about our campaign in the news. Meanwhile, updates continue to be posted regularly on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
Death Penalty Action’s Voices of Experience on the Death Penalty returns this week on Friday at 3pm EDT with an update on the federal executions which just happened, and those which are coming up. Please visit the Voices of Experience on the Death Penalty web Page to learn more, sign up for special program alerts, to learn about sponsorship opportunities!
Thank you for your support and all that you do.
Yours in the Struggle,
Abraham J. Bonowitz, Director
