NH Abolishes. AL Kills. What Will YOU Do?
Hats off to our friends in New Hampshire! Yesterday (5/30/19) the NH Senate voted to override Governor Sununu’s veto of that state’s death penalty repeal legislation. Links to news items are on the Death Penalty Action Facebook page. DPA Co-Director Scott Langley has been helping in NH and was on the scene to capture this among many other fantastic images:
Also yesterday… Alabama carried out the 1499th execution since 1977. Justice Breyer was joined by Justice Ginsberg in saying this:
“This case demonstrates once again,” he wrote, “the unfortunate manner in which death sentences are often — perhaps inevitably — carried out in this country. We have here an illustration of why I believe, as I have previously argued, that the court should reconsider the constitutionality of the death penalty in an appropriate case.”
Here’s an update on which states have abandoned capital punishment, and which have not, from our friends at the Death Penalty Information Center.
SO, What’s next for Death Penalty Action?
- June 29 to July 2 is Starvin’ for Justice; the 26th Annual Fast & Vigil to Abolish the DP.
- July 31st (tentative) is the 1500th execution since 1977.
- Oct 10 is World Day Against the Death Penalty and October 11 kicks off the Ohio Journey of Hope …From Violence to Healing, with a conference in Central Ohio. Details are forthcoming!
Death Penalty Action is leading the effort to highlight the downward trend of executions even as the United States approaches its 1500th execution since 1977. But real change doesn’t happen in a day or a week or a month. It’s a long road to abolition, and together we are making the difference.
Please help Death Penalty Action lead on this issue by chipping in $15 or more right now using this link: or click here to use Paypal. This week we have a special offer: We’ll send a t-shirt like this one to anyone who chips in $50 or more before June 5th — while supplies last! (We currently have adult sizes small to 3X in various colors.)
Work to stop executions doesn’t happen without support from friends like YOU. Death Penalty Action is currently raising funds to support protests on the ground at the site of the 1500th execution in the United States since 1977. At this writing on May 31st, the 1500th execution may be July 31st in Texas. This could change if new dates are added.
Please help raise awareness and coordinate on-the-ground activities around the date of the execution. Your contribution today will make an impact, whether you donate $5, $50, $1500, or even more. Every bit helps.
Much more is on our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/deathpenaltyaction/.

Please make the most of every opportunity to work for justice this week and every week.
More soon. Many thanks!
