Protest at Supreme Court Goes Virtual: Watch, Learn, Act!
The 27th Annual Fast & Vigil to Abolish the Death Penalty at the US Supreme Court will begin tonight at 11:30pm EDT. ALL PROGRAMMING TO BE STREAMED LIVE on the Starvin’ for Justice Facebook Page. What’s it all about?
June 29 is the anniversary of the 1972 Furman v. Georgia decision in which the U.S. Supreme Court found the death penalty to be applied in an arbitrary and capricious manner. At that time, more then 600 condemned inmates had their death sentences reduced to terms of life imprisonment, and all states wanting to have a death penalty were forced to pass new death penalty laws.
July 2 is the anniversary of the 1976 Gregg v. Georgia decision, which allowed executions to resume in the United States.
The four days between these two historic anniversaries provide a natural opportunity for a demonstration of conscience on the issue of judicially-sanctioned state-sponsored killing.
2020’s Fast & Vigil will be virtual. This is the first time in 27 years that we are not encouraging in-person attendance. Nevertheless, because we are on-line, we have opened the door to so much more! There are 16 panel discussions on numerous related topics featuring leaders in our movement who are experts and voices of experience on the issue. Because of our amazing sponsors, anyone may watch these panels free of charge. Those who register will be invited to private opening and closing events via Zoom.
