Protest Report: First Execution By Lame Duck President in 131 Years!
I’m just back from DC, where Death Penalty Action took our protest to the White House yesterday. Even as Orlando Hall was killed, I am inspired that more and more people are standing up and speaking out.
There have now been 8 executions in 18 weeks. Orlando Hall was the 8th prisoner executed under president Trump, tying President Eisenhower’s 8 executions in 8 years. This was the first execution under a lame duck president since 1889–131 years. Two more federal executions are scheduled, and more may still be added before January 20.
Yesterday we had a meeting with Illinois Senator Richard Durbin’s staff, thanking the senator for his leadership in sending a letter with Senator Leahy and Senator Booker, along with Rep. Ayanna Pressley, urging a stop to executions by our lame duck president. The number one thing we all can do now is make sure all Members of Congress are hearing from their constituents.
