Today at 11am, Tomorrow at 4pm, and then… Help #StopExecutions!
In Washington on Friday, we’ll be joined by Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley and Congressman Adriano Espaillat, two congressional leaders fighting to end the federal death penalty.
Death Penalty Action was there outside the federal killing grounds yesterday, and we’ll be there again tomorrow, because of you and with your support. Tomorrow we’ll be in leadership both in Terre Haute and also in Washington DC, in front of the Department of inJustice, with simultaneous demonstrations at 4pm EDT. In Washington, we’ll be joined by Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley and Congressman Adriano Espaillat, two congressional leaders fighting to end the federal death penalty.
I’ve been in touch with many grassroots Native American activists in the past few weeks. Just as Death Penalty Action was asked to be “hands off and stay low key” in respect to the strategy of the legal team, so too were most Native American voices. Now that Lezmond Mitchell has been killed, we’re going to lift some of those voices, starting today.
Unlike the US government, we will keep our promise to the indigenous community by working to close the legal loophole that allowed the federal government to ignore the wishes of the sovereign Navajo Nation to not have the death penalty. In this case, everyone involved was Navajo, and the crime took place on tribal lands. Closing that legal loophole is one of the demands in our petition and organizational sign-on letter.
Join us today at 11am EDT for a Facebook Live conversation with Mark Charles, a Navajo man running as an independent candidate for president of the United States. In addition to reflecting on yesterday’s execution of a member of his tribe, Mr Charles will address issues of white supremacy and the history of the US government and tribal sovereignty. (if you can’t watch live, the video will be there afterwards.)
There is so much more to share. Please check our social media platforms for videos and news coverage from last night’s execution. Twitter, Facebook, and now on Instagram too!
REMINDER: With two federal executions this week in the middle of the republican National Convention, right now is THE critical moment for our movement to reach more people like you, who know the death penalty is wrong. This week it is a hot issue, which is why we must take advantage of this moment.
Death Penalty Action is calling it out and organizing to keep more executions from happening in the future. To do that we are building our numbers and our coalition. Your donation today enhances our capacity today and this week. Please help now.
Thank you,
