A prayerful & powerful vigil in opposition to the execution of Don Johnson in Tennessee last night. (5/16/19)

Last night we saw the 1,496th and 1,497th executions since 1977. Yes, these men are more than numbers. We worked these past few days very closely with many of the people closest to Don Johnson in Tennessee, and stood with them in their grief and their outrage. They are inspired to redouble their efforts. See images and video and a Facebook Live feed of the entire powerful and prayerful vigil outside Riverbend Maximum Security Institution at.

Our thanks, respect and admiration also goes to the legal teams in Tennessee and Alabama for last night, and in Florida and Alabama for the next two executions currently set for later this month.

We are now much closer to a troubling and shameful milestone on the road to Abolition. At this writing, the 1500th execution in the post-furman era of the death penalty may be in July, and possibly sooner.

The Death Penalty Information Center has provided some new graphics (current to the 1495th execution earlier this month) to demonstrate trends on the death penalty. Please check those out and grab them for your use at

You are invited to help use the fact of the next big round number to continue to build the momentum of our movement AWAY from executions.

More soon. Many thanks!

PS: Your donation will help us pay for tracking and preparation. We’ll need to support abolitionists on the ground once it is clear where #1500 may be. This may include last-minute travel, new signage, and other outreach. The more we have to work with, the greater our impact will be. If possible, when you invest, simply check the box at the bottom of the form to make your investment weekly, monthly or even quarterly!
