Unexpected Heroes
Today is the March for Life in Washington, DC. As you know, many among us are passionate from various perspectives on the multiple “life” issues. Death Penalty Action is focused on ending judicial executions by state governments, and today we wanted to lift up and honor some of our allies wading into the broader mix to lift up opposition to executions.
- First is Catholic Bishop Anthony Taylor, the Bishop for Arkansas. Death Penalty Action worked with Bishop Taylor in Arkansas last April. On Wednesday he announced that he will not
- participate in the annual “March for Life” in Little Rock because the keynote speaker is a proponent of executions. Such leadership is unexpected and, we think, unprecedented. Read his statement here.
- Shane Claiborne, who chairs Death Penalty Action’s Advisory Board, blogged about the need for better consistency by those who call themselves “Pro-Life.”
- The Catholic Mobilizing Network to End the Use of the Death Penalty — Our friends at CMN are engaged right now in the March for Life in Washington, DC, helping everyone there understand that the death penalty is an important life issue too.
Meanwhile, executions continue. Texas carried out the first execution of 2018 yesterday evening. Ohio’s next execution is set for Feb 13. Death Penalty Action co-director Abe Bonowitz lives in Ohio and works closely with Ohioans to Stop Executions. He’s been busy as part of the team there, organizing a series of film screenings to help raise awareness and protest in the case. Learn more here (press release) and here (just-released video). Both links will lead you to wear you can give Governor Kasich a piece of your mind.
Have an excellent weekend, and THANK YOU for all you do to help stop the killing…
Yours in the Struggle,
Abe & Scott
