Veteran to be Executed in Ohio!
It’s been a few weeks and we wanted to make sure you are weighing in where it matters most, because together we really can make the difference when it comes to ending executions.
First, with Memorial Day approaching in the United States, we want to acknowledge and thank all those who have died in service to this country.
In Ohio, we’re working with Ohioans to Stop Executions to stop the next scheduled execution in that state. Today, Death Penalty Action co-director Abe Bonowitz will attend the clemency hearing for Robert Van Hook, who is scheduled to be executed July 18. Van Hook is an honorably discharged veteran who fell through the cracks. Learn more and take action here. Follow Abe’s tweets here.

- We are leading the organizing Starvin’ for Justice, the upcoming 25th Annual Fast & Vigil to Abolish the Death Penalty at the United States Supreme Court. Watch for details next week!
- No news is good news in New Hampshire, where Governor Sununu has not yet followed through on his plan to veto the abolition bill there. Click here to watch the press conference by murder victim family members who then delivered YOUR petition signatures to Governor Sununu urging him to sign the bill to make that state the latest to abolish the death penalty!
- The governor in Illinois made some noise about reinstating the death penalty in that state. It is bluster, but Death Penalty Action is engaged with abolitionists in Illinois to monitor the situation.
- Our friends in California have launched a petition urging Governor Brown to free Kevin Cooper. Sign it here! (This one is personal — Abe will write more about that soon.)
