The US Supreme Court denied three separate petitions seeking relief. Billy Wardlow was pronounced dead at 7:52pm EDT. This was the first Texecution carried out since the start of the COVID19 pandemic. According to press reports, Wardlow gave no final statement and spent his final moments smiling and consoling his family in the adjoining witness room.

It is times like these that test our resolve. Know that every time the state carries out an execution it increases opposition to the death penalty. The question is what do we do with our opposition?

There are more petitions to sign on the Death Penalty Action “Take Action” page. The first federal executions since 2003 are still set for next Monday and Friday — Federal action opportunities are here. Please watch for and share Death Penalty Action updates and posts from our Facebook and Twitter pages. And support this work — especially in times of loss.

Tomorrow we get up and keep working for the day when there will never be another execution in the United States. We are on the path to that goal, and while it may not feel like it right now, we are winning. Together, we will get there.

Yours in the Struggle,

Abe & Scott, Co-Directors
