Today we are ALL Nebraskans…

Death Penalty Action
2 min readAug 14, 2018

Today in Nebraska, as the Associated Press reports, “Carey Dean Moore is still scheduled to be executed Tuesday for the 1979 shooting deaths of two Omaha cab drivers.”

Right there is why this is so wrong. Two “cab drivers?” No. Maynard Helgeland and Reuel Van Ness Jr. Say those names again. Maynard Helgeland and Reuel Van Ness Jr.

The very fact that the families of these men have been waiting nearly 40 years to begin a healing process belies the promise many death penalty supporters hold out to the family members of murder victims. “Wait until we kill him, and THEN you will feel better.”

The news today is all about the failure of the drug manufacturer’s lawsuit seeking to prevent the state from using their product to execute prisoners. Again, a misnomer. It has nothing to do with how we kill our prisoners. It’s THAT we kill them in the face of a system so broken. THAT is the real crime here.

After abolishing it’s death penalty and having it restored by referendum, Nebraska is poised to resume executions after 20 years — learn more and take action here.

Last week, Tennessee executed a severely mentally ill man — that state’s first execution in nine years. Death Penalty Action Advisory Board Member Griffin Hardy and Co-Director Abe Bonowitz were there. Outside the prison, Abe added a few simple words to the vigil. See the video here. (If it starts from the beginning, Abe starts at about the 21 minute mark — feel free to jump forward, but the other speakers and images are worth checking too!)
