WE WON! Indiana State Police Backs Down, Execution Protests Now Unencumbered…
The Trump Administration has been rapidly trying to kill as many prisoners as it can, just to look tough on crime. As protests against these politically-motivated executions have grown, state troopers in Indiana shut down the roads around the federal prison in Terre Haute, forcing protests out of sight of the federal killing facilities.
Together with allies and with the assistance of the ACLU of Indiana, today Death Penalty Action ensured that the Indiana State Police will not interfere as we carry your message straight to the gates of the prison, if that’s what it comes to. We had to sue, and we’ve made certain that future protests of federal executions will be at the front gates of the prison rather than nearly two miles away. Read our press release here.

Our government apparently has no problem violating civil and human rights when they think they can get away with it. Winning this lawsuit is a victory forthe First Amendment of the United States Constitution, but it is troubling that it took a lawsuit for us to be able to shine a spotlight on the outrageous behavior going on behind the razor wire.
Death Penalty Action has been highlighting the political nature of this rush to executions for more than a year. As two more execution dates were recently announced, Death Penalty Action launched a national sign-on letter for organizations, and nwERLY 100 organizations have signed on in just a few days! We’re still inviting individuals to sign our petition calling on Congress to investigate irregularities in how last month’s executions were carried out. We are also asking Congress to stop future presidents from using executions for political purposes by ending the federal death penalty entirely. Additional information is here.
